The Mission of the Baton Rouge Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation is to provide services to medically needy individuals diagnosed with sickle cell disease. The Foundation promotes local and national research in support of a cure and provides treatment support to enhance the quality of life for those suffering from this incurable disease.

What is Sickle Cell?

Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. Healthy red blood cells are round, and they move freely through small blood vessels to carry oxygen to all parts of the body. In individuals with sickle cell disease, the red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a “sickle”.
